Wafa Sultan, an Arab-American psychologist, was recently interviewed (Feb 21st, 2006) on Al Jazeera in which she explained the clash between the West and the Muslim world is not a clash of civilizations, but a clash of eras.

Below is the first paragraph of the transcript. Read it for sure, but I would encourage you to watch the entire video…it’s really telling.

"The clash we are witnessing around the world is not a clash of religions, or a clash of civilizations. It is a clash between two opposites, between two eras. It is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality. It is a clash between freedom and oppression, between democracy and dictatorship. It is a clash between human rights, on the one hand, and the violation of these rights, on other hand. It is a clash between those who treat women like beasts, and those who treat them like human beings. What we see today is not a clash of civilizations. Civilizations do not clash, but compete."

I recently announced to my closest friends that I was thinking of changing my stance on the war on terror. Not that I was against it, but I was about to change sides.

As you know, I’m a member of a group called Protest Warrior. This group was started by two Jews in Texas. I joined this group about a year after 911. Our goat is to support American troops, defend Israel, and help spread freedom and liberty around the world. While I have met some really awesome Jewish people in this group….not a ONE of my close Jewish friends support the war on terror and what Bush is doing.

At the last Anti-War protest I was at with Protest Warrior in Temecula, we tried to give the other side…I had a really interesting conversation with this girl.

I was the watching the back of one of our guys dressed up like Saddam Hussein in a black and white jail outfit and wore a sign around his neck that said “Impeach Bush!” He approached the anti-war protestors and told them, “Thank you liberal America for supporting me!”

He said that to this girl, and she responded that she is not an American, she is a Palestinian. I asked her where in Palestine she is from. She said Israel. We had about a fifteen minute, very rational conversation. She explained how fifteen members of her family were killed when the Jews took over Israel. I really started to see her side.

After that conversation, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Why am I defending Israel when I’m not even Jewish and none of my Jewish friends support it? Maybe the PLO side has a good point. At least they are ALL fighting for their cause. Only here in America would you have Jews fighting against their home land. Very mind boggling to me.

But, after more thought, I decided to keep defending Israel, because it’s the right thing to do. We cannot let Israel and the Jewish people be exterminated. We can’t let another Holocaust happen again. Right now, I don’t think most Americans realize how close the Jews are to that reality.
